Messier Objects

Because the Milky Way runs right through this constellation, there are many fine clusters and nebulae to be seen. The Lagoon Nebula is the popular name for M8. This bright nebula can be seen with the naked eye. However, optical aids are needed to see M17, the Omega Nebula. M18 is a nearby open star cluster. A small telescope will reveal a double star at the heart of the Trifid Nebula, M20.

Other open clusters in this constellation are M21, M23 and M25. M22 is a globular cluster, more easily seen through binoculars than with the naked eye. M28 is another globular, as are M54, M55, M69, M70 and M75. Optical aids are needed to see all of these objects. M24 is actually part of the star cloud comprising the Milky Way which is the plane of our galaxy.

Other Deep Sky Objects

Ross 154 is less than 10 light years away but it is still too dim to be seen with the naked eye.
