M46 is an open cluster which can be resolved in binoculars or a small telescope. Another open star cluster, M47, is slightly easier to see. M93 is yet another open cluster.
This constellation is rich in open star clusters. NGC 2451 is visible to the naked eye whilst NGC 2477 is so distant that it resembles a globular cluster except under high magnifications.
The Pi Puppids shower is so young that it has been observed only since 1972. These meteors are very slow but bright, and the activity levels vary from year to year. Comet 26P/Grigg-Skjellerup is associated with this shower and the radiant is near pi Puppis.
The radiant of the Puppid-Velids lies just inside the boundary of the constellation of Vela.
