Lyra
M56 is a globular cluster. The planetary nebula
M57 is more famously known as the
Ring Nebula. Both objects are visible through a small telescope.
- alpha
- Vega is a
first magnitude star which forms
part of the asterism called the "Summer Triangle."
- beta
- Sheliak is a double star when viewed through a
small telescope.
- gamma
- Sulafat
- RR
- Although this star has no common name, it is a famous variable
star and the prototype of an entire class of objects called
RR Lyrae stars. RR Lyrae stars are found mostly in
globular clusters and are sometimes referred to as
cluster variables.
The Lyrids are fast and can be very bright
with some leaving trains. Associated with comet
C/1861 G1 Thatcher, this shower is very
unpredictable, making it one to watch. The radiant is actually within the
boundaries of Hercules.
