Messier Objects

M56 is a globular cluster. The planetary nebula M57 is more famously known as the Ring Nebula. Both objects are visible through a small telescope.

Stars With (Un)Common Names

alpha
Vega is a first magnitude star which forms part of the asterism called the "Summer Triangle."
beta
Sheliak is a double star when viewed through a small telescope.
gamma
Sulafat
RR
Although this star has no common name, it is a famous variable star and the prototype of an entire class of objects called RR Lyrae stars. RR Lyrae stars are found mostly in globular clusters and are sometimes referred to as cluster variables.

Meteor Shower Radiants

The Lyrids are fast and can be very bright with some leaving trains. Associated with comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher, this shower is very unpredictable, making it one to watch. The radiant is actually within the boundaries of Hercules.
